A creative, rewarding choice
I'm a newbie, at work on my third audiobook narration. It includes voicing cartoon characters, and is quite a stretch! But I'm finding this world to be very stimulating, and a welcome retreat from the day-to-day pressures of caring for my family, consulting, and living in the age of an inconceivably daft president.
I can understand why voice actors in the commercial space find audiobooks to be an irrational choice, given the modest earning potential relative to time required. But I'm not chasing dollars in doing this--I'm pursuing the satisfaction of wrangling an author's intent while anticipating a listener's reaction. As an author myself (Mack Sanderson is a pseudonym), I wonder what it would be like to have a narrator try to bring life to my writing...and would likely be curmudgeonly about it.
Yet that's the potential reward of this. With the goal of satisfying both author and listener by immersing myself in the assignment, I'll keep at it.
