When I was in the fifth grade, my English teacher (I think at that age they called it "reading teacher") asked the class if anyone would like to read aloud from Island of the Blue Dolphin. I raised my hand like it was spring-loaded, confident that as I looked around, I would see at least a dozen of my fellow students' arms waving like cattails in the North Carolina breeze. Nope, no one. They didn't like me much. But as I stumbled and struggled to pronounce "abalone", I vowed those kids would live to eat my words.
